The RESPECT Eastern Area has been up and running for the last 4 years now. In that time we have seen our membership grow from 70 at the launch to somewhere in the region of 400 now. We believe our main aim is to support each other and not to forget that staff in this area are as isolated as anywhere else in the country, therefore support is paramount.
Achievements to date: We have visited all but 2 of the senior management teams in the area and believe this is one of the better ways to gain the support of senior managers for the work of RESEPCT. We are also distributed booklets to job centres and employment agencies explaining what the service does and incorporating a piece about RESPECT. One of our members received the Prison Officer of the year award for Diversity (Ian Wood). Eastern Area RESPECT is not working with Area Manager closely. Our Area Committee is on the brink of training 9 members of staff as contact officers to work with RESPECT Central Office. Eastern Area Manager Mr. Danny McAllister has been a supporter of the work of RESPECT morally and financially ensuing RESPECT's input in the work of all the Establishments in the East. Area Committee: Committee is now working in a three-tear structure. It has been segregated into three different Sub-Committees:
They are working closely together to ensure that obligations and accountabilities has been met. If you feel you could be part of such an exciting group, then contact one of our representatives. The biggest plus for the area is the growth in confidence of the staff that have been part of the Area Committee since the beginning. If nothing else is considered an achievement their growth is definitely one we can be proud of. We have also established strong links with other similar organisations for sharing a best practice;
