West Midlands Area Committee was launched on 18th September 2001 at HMYOI & RC Brinsford. We have to date over 150 members in our area. RESPECT should be seen as a support Network for Minority Ethnic staff and as an organisation that seeks to eradicate racism in the workplace by working as consultants with their colleagues and Senior management so that issues and cultures can actually get recognised and therefore be challenged and hence changed for the future of the Prison Service.
Achievements to date: We have produced an area business plan, and circulated copies to all committee members and the Area Manager together with an annual newsletter that coincides with the anniversary of the launch of RESPECT (24th January). Successfully organised the 2003 Annual National Conference at Stoneleigh Park. Held a days training at Newbold Revel on the Race Relations amendment act 2000, Institutional Racism and Conflict management, to celebrate the anniversary of RESPECT. Committee member Steve Martin nominated for Prison Officer of the Year. We have built outside links with the community: Area Secretary Donald Grant is now sitting on the North Staffs Race Equality Council (REC). National Executive Committee (NEC) member Brian Bent is also a committee member sitting on the Worcester Race Equality Council. We are currently in the final stages of completing a RESPECT presentation package that will flexible and multifunctional. Forthcoming Local Events:
