Jaswinder Singh Nagra - General Secretary of RESPECT

I worked for the Royal Mail and in the Leicestershire Constabulary as a Police Officer before I joined HM Prison Service in 1995, as a Night Patrol Officer working at HMYOI & RC Glen Parva. In May 1999 I became involved in the RESPOND programme and was a founding member of the Staff RESPOND Advisory Group as it was then called.

The original 23 members became 9 within 6 months and during the following months the group concentrated on setting the foundations needed for the launch of RESPECT- HM Prison Service Minority Ethnic Staff Support Network. I was elected Secretary of the group.

After the launch of RESPECT, in January 2001, I became General-Secretary and the first and only full time official of RESPECT. This was due to the forward thinking and understanding by my Governor, Charles Bushell, of the work needed to be carried out by RESPECT. I was seconded to work at HM Prison Service Headquarters in Cleland House, working along with the Diversity and Equality Group.

I now work along with the full time Chair and two Executive Officers in the RESPECT Central Office in Abell House, London.
